Chapter History

The Lucy Wolcott Barnum Chapter was organized in 1909, by Louise Barnum Robbins, who was unanimously reelected as Regent until 1917. The Abi Evans Chapter was organized by Ayesha Raven Laidlaw in two months and twelve days, from December 1926 to February 1927. No small accomplishment for a woman with two small boys. There were 18 organizing members and 22 charter members. Lucy Wolcott Barnum had 47 organizing members and 66 charter members.

On April 14th, 2001, the National Board of Management approved the merger of the Abi Evans Chapter of Tecumseh and the Lucy Wolcott Barnum Chapter of Adrian.  On Thursday, May 17th we were merged in a moving ceremony presided over by State Regent Elizabeth H. Steward Garner. Sixty-one members and guests witnessed the ceremony as the members of Abi Evans and Lucy Wolcott Barnum affirmed they were ready for and committed to the merger. A brief history of each chapter was given by the Regents, Joan Ketteman (Abi Evans) and Kathryn Houghton (Lucy Wolcott Barnum).

Our honored guests that night were State Regent Elizabeth H. Steward Garner, State Second Vice-Regent Marydeana Duckworth, State Chaplain Harriet Tindal, State Librarian Lois Welch and Lucy Wolcott Barnum member Phyllis Rickard, State Recording Secretary.

The individual members of the Abi Evans Chapter and the Lucy Wolcott Barnum Chapter have been friends and neighbors for a long time. The merger will allow us to pool our efforts on behalf of DAR. We are looking forward to the future.
